This course is scheduled in three month increments between belt ranks. This assists in keeping you on track and accountable along with helping the instructors to offer the best quality training for you.
The ranking system is similar to other Korean martial arts in that it begins with 8th gup (rank) and progresses to 1stgup. Following certification as 1st gup you will be eligible to test for the rank of 1st Dan (Black Belt) in-person, at the Richmond, Minnesota Do Jang. Although the colored belt testing can be completed online, the Black Belt testing must take place in-person.
Your requirements for colored belt advancement will be:
- Four hours a week of training over twelve-week span
- Completion of an online quiz
- A live, online exam
- Required equipment purchase
Kumdo is very intensive training and extremely rewarding. The curriculum steps you through the levels progressively and will add positively to all areas of your life.
In the beginning of training, you will start to learn the technique of the sword which will symbolically carry over into aspects of your life. The first lesson is respect. Respect for your own limitations and then a respect for what it means to be responsible for and protect others. The lessons you will learn are not limited to physically but will also include the philosophy for good life values.
Focus is also a priority for kumdo. It was originally based on real life and death situations with real life consequences. Keep this in mind during your training and you will find your instincts and awareness increase.
Kumdo is an art for everyone, from young to old and all genders. The art of the sword can level out many strengths and weaknesses.
